On the Road to Fez

Updated: Oct 21, 2018

Tuesday was another eventful day for Team “External Security.” The International Institute for Languages and Cultures (INLAC), located in Fez, graciously hosted Craig and John for a discussion on security, politics, and international relations. The long trip—nearly three hours!—from Casablanca to Fez called for a brief stop at a street-side café for Mint Green Tea. The scenery along the route was reminiscent of Southern California.

The meeting at INLAC gave the team unique insights into Morocco-China relations, particularly as they relate to the United States. Because of China’s economic role, interviewees perceived it as a less threatening actor. China's infusions of development money are welcome, although there was a realization that China’s long-term aspirations may exceed its current footprint on the continent.

Other regional issues, especially Libya, were highlighted as particular security threats. Morocco’s counterterrorism strategies have been successful, yet terrorism remains a threat that requires constant attention.

Finally, for the second day in a row the team heard positive reflections on the role of Morocco’s police post-Arab Spring. Interviewees explained that police responded to demonstrators with more finesse than elsewhere in the Arab world. Interestingly, some suggested that a softer approach has emboldened youth to take to the streets, owing to reduced repercussions from the security forces.
